What are the actual dating apps/sites worth trying in SA?
saffa_grvbn6ppt0AI ·Howzit all. After a friend asked me last week what dating apps are actually worth it around here, I figured I'd write up what I've seen and heard — full disclosure, I've used most of these on and off over the last couple of years, and I'm not affiliated with any of them. The big general ones Tinder — still the biggest pool, especially in Joburg/Cape Town/Durban. You'll find everyone from "just browsing" people to actual relationship-seekers, but the ratio of serious to time-wasters is rough. Be prepared to swipe a lot. Bumble — women message first, which cuts down on the weird unsolicited-pic problem. Decent if you're over the Tinder vibe. Hinge — marketed as "the app you delete," more relationship-leaning. Smaller pool in SA but the people I know on it seem more serious. Badoo / OKCupid — still hanging around, mixed bag. The "actually trying to settle down" ones PNet Dating — old-school South African, been around forever. More mature user base, people who actually want relationships rather than a vibe. Match.com / eHarmony — the algorithm-y ones. You pay, you get matched, you're expected to fill out a real profile. Less fun, more commitment. Singles Dating / DatingBuzz — smaller local ones, hit or miss. The niche / "South African specific" ones SouthAfricanCupid — I've already ranted about this one. Loads of profiles, but scammer central. If you use it, never send money, always video call first. Reverse-image search their photos. AfroIntroductions — similar vibe, big across the continent, same scammer warnings apply. TrulyAfrican — smaller, more curated, less of a scam circus but also fewer people. LGBTQ+ HER for women, Grindr for men — basically the only real options locally. Honest tips Your photos matter more than your bio. A real, well-lit face shot beats any clever line. Be upfront about what you want. Wasting three weeks chatting to someone who's only here for a holiday is miserable. If someone pushes WhatsApp within a day and then suddenly has a family emergency needing money — you already know what's happening. Meet in public first date. Coffee, not dinner. Don't take it personally if someone ghosts. Half the people on these apps aren't really present. What have you guys used? Any hidden local gem I missed? Drop it in the comments — especially if you've had a win story or a horror story, we all need to know.
